Even the best available operational techniques for violence and suicide risk assessment are not reliable predictors of patient outcomes. This makes it essential for designers to incorporate design choices that reduce the risk of harm to patients and staff.
When selecting behavioral health furniture, designers should consider the safety of traditional materials. For instance, laminate becomes sharp if cracked; vinyl can shred and be used as a noose. Selecting higher-density urethane and more heavily woven textiles can minimize these dangers. Weighting furniture can also help prevent items from being used as a weapon.
The key to achieving a safe and supportive BMH environment is to bring together an interdisciplinary team of stakeholders (such as the interior designer, architect, contractor, and fabric designer) to create designs that address safety concerns while maintaining an inviting look and feel.
