The Workshop
Pre-fabrication and modular construction are one of the biggest trends in healthcare today, and by the look of its current trajectory, it is here to stay. There are many advantages, and challenges, when incorporating this type of construction into current and new healthcare design projects.
This virtual interactive, collaborative, problem-solving workshop is designed to project stakeholders (designers, facility executives, administrators, and care providers) to explore the key tenants of pre-fabrication and modular construction, how the benefits of “better, cheaper, faster” is balanced with quality and safety, and how design/build processes and budgets can be reframed from traditional healthcare design/build projects.
Through presentations, case studies and conversations, attendees will gain into the latest developments in the field and the understand the advantages and challenges of the prefabrication/modular approach. Attendees also will benefit from interactive exercises with fellow attendees and faculty and can share questions and ideas with the owners, faculty, and solution providers throughout the event.

Tom Jung has over 30 years in the healthcare design field, with a primary focus on regulatory compliance and coordination. Spending 24 years with the New York State Department of Health’s Certificate of Need Program, Tom directed the effort for 16 of those years while overseeing the review and approval of more than $2 billion dollars of new projects annually. He is a founding member of The Center for Health Design’s Environmental Standards Council, and attributes that first and ongoing experience as a major influence on the nature of his communication with the designers and providers seeking state licensure.
Tom has also been intimately involved with development of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities since 1997, including Facilities Guidelines Institute board membership between 2003 and 2014, and served as CEO of the Facility Guidelines Institute for one year, stepping down in February 2015. He presently consults with a select number of clients on a limited basis.
Chris is an architect, manufacturer, builder and teacher. He believes everything can be made better, and figuring out how is part of his job. He works with smart designers, industrial engineers, manufacturers and builders to make better buildings faster.
Designing training facilities for Honda and Kia, Giattina was introduced to manufacturing methods that could improve the design and construction process. The key is bringing an understanding of manufacturing to design so that its productivity can be realized in construction. He helped make a framework to organize ideas and methods: Design Manufacture Construct™ was the result.
GA is his architectural firm, it is the D in DMC. He designs thoughtful buildings AND knows how to knit the manufacturing methods into traditional construction that enhance a building's quality while speeding its delivery to market.
BLOX is his manufacturer, the M in DMC. It was created out of necessity - we needed a manufacturer interested in making our building parts. It is lean from stem to stern and routinely works with other architects, engineers and trade contractors.
From 2006 through 2020 Mike LaMont was the Vice President of Facilities Management for Rush University Medical Center and in that role managed Capital Projects, Corporate Real Estate, Medical Center Engineering, Parking & Utilities and Occupational Safety. His responsibilities included planning and oversight of all the research, clinical and administrative capital projects and he managed all aspects of facility life safety projects. His 40 years of engineering and construction experience includes a variety of complex building and transportation projects. Mike was also an adjunct instructor in the Rush University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Health Systems Management where he taught a graduate level course on Healthcare Facility Planning.
He is a Built Environment Network Emeritus and the network’s liaison to the National Academy of Medicine.
Ivan Caso is the Executive Director of Design and Construction Management Center of Excellence (ED-D&CM). He is responsible for coordinating Construction Management Business Line functions (Project Controls, Quality Assurance, Contracts and Safety) to assure all capital projects throughout the Kaiser Permanente Enterprise are supported.
Ivan was previously Executive Director of Construction Acquisition SCAL. This role was similar to his current National role except that it was specific to SCAL. In the Regional Role, Ivan was responsible for directly managing an organization of 80+ SCAL employees in construction project management, estimating, quality assurance, safety, and contracts. Ivan reported Capital Project status to SCAL Kaiser Permanente Leadership and represented NFS in the SCAL Capital Strategy Council for the cost, budget and schedule in all business cases.
Michael Doiel is a Senior Vice President with HDR. He has accumulated more than 41 years of experience with a focus on large complex programs and projects and currently serves as the Director of Project Delivery for the Architecture Building Group. His team oversees alternative delivery, critical and strategic activities, project controls and training. Mike champions our Integrated Project Delivery initiative and is dedicated to enhancing safety and quality thru innovative modular/prefabrication strategies.
Mike is a registered architect, a licensed interior designer, and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
Damian Huneycutt's passion is using the built environment to make the experience better for anyone and everyone that comes into contact with one of his projects. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare design, he understands healthcare can be tricky. It is not uncommon for the patient or a family member to experience the design on what could be the best day, or the worst day of their life. He too, has experienced this first hand with the premature birth of his son. As a result of Damian's experiences, he strives to provide a design that can help the care giver administer care easier, provide the patient a better healing environment, and allow the family members of the patient to be more relaxed in a setting where anxiety can run rampant.
Sara Curry brings 15+ years of experience leading, planning, and delivering a variety of complex construction projects. In her role as JE Dunn Construction’s Prefabrication Integration Director, she leverages her education in architecture and business, plus her technical skills, highly collaborative approach, and drive for results and innovation. She serves as a key leader in planning projects with heavy prefabrication and modular plans to improve quality, collaboration, and speed to market for her clients and partners. Recent publications include features in National Women in Construction Magazine on her highlight on how women’s roles are changing in the construction industry, and in Medical Design and Construction Magazine discussing the evolution of virtual design and construction positions and the value they provide on construction projects with prefabrication approaches. Sara earned an MBA and a Master of Architecture from Texas Tech University.
In a career spanning three decades, Deb has been honored for her evidence-based project delivery approach. Honing a background in business management, design, engineering and construction, Deb champions short and long-term strategies that shape industry trends and anticipate next-generation solutions.
Deb is a past recipient of Building Design & Construction’s inaugural 40-und-40 program and the Healthcare Design Top Twenty Making a Difference in Healthcare. She is a diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives and an Executive Committee Member of the Design-Build Institute of America National Board of Directors. She holds a degree from Miami University (1989) and is an Honors recipient of the University of Wisconsin Business Management Program (1993) and Harvard Graduate School of Design (1994). Additionally, she maintains DBIA Certification and registration as a USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) professional and Evidence-Based Design Accreditation (EDAC).
Randal has over 42 years of ambulatory medical facility programming/space planning, design, construction, construction management, project management, healthcare real estate development/analysis, and healthcare facility operational management at the VP and Director levels. He is the founder of RFBrand Consulting, providing healthcare organizations with strategic facility planning and design to harness the value, efficiencies, and flexibility of ‘future proofing’ with modular medical construction components.
As the previous Director of Facilities and Support Services for a large Physician-owned medical group in Seattle, Washington, he developed and designed a leading-edge modular approach to the construction of ambulatory medical tenant improvements. This modular approach includes using modular unitized wall panels and integrating a vacuum plumbing waste system (first-time utilization in combination with unitized modular walls in a medical TI application).
Throughout his extensive career, Randal has designed over 3 million square feet of medical space planning. He taught Project Management and Construction Management at the Bachelor’s level and holds bachelor's degrees in Architecture and Construction Management from the University of Nebraska and an M.B.A. from Seattle University. He is also a registered Architect in the State of Washington.
Will Lichtig is Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President at Boldt. Will has worked with teams to develop and implement lean process for target value design, lean production planning and control, Built in Quality, lean problem solving, and other key processes that provide innovative approaches to project delivery. He also provides leadership coaching to project teams as they develop the wherewithal to deliver projects using lean methods. He is an recognized leader in the lean and integrated project delivery movements. He has been at the forefront in the development of Integrated Lean Project Delivery® process. He is a Board member and past Chairman of the Lean Construction Institute.
Dan Carlton is the visionary behind Mark III’s mission to lead the evolution of construction. As President and majority owner of Mark III Construction and it’s respective LLC’s (M3 MEP, M3 Service, and M3 Components) he is responsible for all strategic and business aspects of the companies. Dan has been the vision and strategic leader behind M3’s components business and will stop at nothing until we have exposed the world to a new way to build.
Keith Fine is a Principal at SLAM and serves as the Management Lead, Technical lead for the Los Angeles Studio as well as the national Director of Innovation. With a computer programming and construction background, Keith is able to combine his passions for both design and innovation from a very unique perspective. He approaches all challenges with a strong team building focus that leverages the very best from those around him. Through these networked relationships and exposures, Keith has a unique skill at understanding the interconnected nature of seemingly disparate technologies and cultivating the development of new and innovative solutions.
Bobby enjoys the intersection of planning, design, and construction. As the Design Director for MD+, he is continually implementing new tools to improve the effectiveness of the design and the efficiency of documentation. From a planning and construction perspective, Bobby works with clients, users, and consultants to evaluate emerging technologies and modular design strategies into projects, delivering an overall better product for the user and value to the organization. His omnichannel approach and collaborative nature bring a breadth of knowledge to the team.
Bobby Vance leverages his experience in both the profession and academia to bring a unique perspective to ModularDesign+. He has experience in product design, commercial, residential, and healthcare architecture, design+build, project management, marketing, and fundraising. Bobby looks to bolster the impact of Amp, CannonDesign’s in-house innovation incubator initiative, to encourage the entrepreneurial ideas recognized by Fast Company as one of the Most Innovative Companies in architecture. As a member of CannonDesign’s NEXT Council, Bobby serves as a conduit between design teams and firm leadership to evolve the practice. The NEXT Council functions as a think tank for innovation and actionable solutions that help differentiate CannonDesign as a leading design practice.
Prior to joining CannonDesign, Bobby served as the Program Manager for the Center for Design Research at Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies. After completing both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Architecture from Virginia Tech, Bobby joined the faculty in the School of Architecture + Design. Co-leading many design+build projects during his tenure, he helped lead the team to victory in the 2018 Solar Decathlon Middle East competition in Dubai with FutureHAUS, a prefabricated smart home exhibited in Dubai, Times Square, and Washington, D.C.
