Last March, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted clinical care and work life as we knew it. Health systems had to adapt and develop innovative solutions quickly. Today as the number of cases are starting to fall and the country and world are starting to reopen, there is an opportunity to reflect on what we’ve experienced and look forward. Rather than designing spaces the way they have been done in the past, it is a time to re-consider how these spaces can be designed and organized differently.
Join this esteemed panel of thought leaders as they discuss what decisions they are pondering now in response to changes in the delivery of care and the way we work. Hear their predictions about the future of care delivery processes and how systems and design will fit into ushering in that future. While the path forward is not totally clear, come to hear the various factors they are juggling to shed some light on their views about tomorrow’s healthcare delivery and healthcare design.
This panel is comprised of members of The Center for Health Design Built Environment Network (BEN), a group of executive-level professionals who are dedicated to improving safety, quality, and sustainability in healthcare.

Mike LaMont, PE, SE, MBA
Former VP of Facilities Management, Rush University Medical Center
From 2006 through 2020 Mike LaMont was the Vice President of Facilities Management for Rush University Medical Center and in that role managed Capital Projects, Corporate Real Estate, Medical Center Engineering, Parking & Utilities and Occupational Safety. His responsibilities included planning and oversight of all the research, clinical and administrative capital projects and he managed all aspects of facility life safety projects. His 40 years of engineering and construction experience includes a variety of complex building and transportation projects. Mike was also an adjunct instructor in the Rush University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Health Systems Management where he taught a graduate level course on Healthcare Facility Planning.
Nate Chandler
General Manager, Steelcase Health
Since 2019, Nate has been the General Manager for Steelcase Health responsible for business strategy, research, product portfolio management, sales, and brand marketing. Prior to the GM role, Nate served as Director, New Product Category for Steelcase Health. At Steelcase Health, Nate champions the use of a human-centered and evidence-based design process to create products and solutions that result in inspiring spaces; enhance the healthcare experience for patients and care givers, clinicians and staff; and help to improve the outcomes and economics of healthcare.
Prior to Steelcase, Nate held diverse functional leadership positions at Herman Miller as well as various financial positions in the aerospace and automotive sectors.
Nate holds a B.S. in Accounting from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He also graduated with honors from Western Michigan University with an MBA in Marketing.
Chris Knueven
Vice President, Design and Construction, Bon Secours Mercy Health
Chris is currently the Vice President of Design and Construction at Bon Secours Mercy Health and responsible for a 45-hospital system located in 7 states in the Midwest and Eastern US with an annual budget of $450M for construction. Chris has over 30 years of industry experience in the creation and building of medical facilities, office complexes, laboratories, university facility expansion and redesign, retail and multi-family construction with a focus on Quality and Compliance.
Michael A. McKay, AIA, ACHE, EDAC, LEED AP, NCARB
Director, Planning Design and Construction, UW Health
Mike is the Director of Planning Design Construction and Real Estate for UW Health, the integrated health system of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, caring for more than 650,000 patients each year with 1,785 employed physicians and 21,000 employees at seven hospitals and 77 clinic locations. UW Health is governed by the UW Hospitals and Clinics Authority and partners with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy, to fulfill its patient care, research, education, and community service missions.

Senior Vice President, Jefferson Real Estate and Facilities, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health
Clayton Mitchell serves as Senior Vice President, Real Estate and Facilities for Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health.
At Jefferson, “Mitch” provides the leadership skills needed to implement Jefferson’s five-year Master Facility Plan (MFP). This includes chairing the Master Facilities Planning committee, which continuously monitors space assignments, allocations, and MFP projects and requests to ensure they align with their academic and clinical strategic initiatives. Mitch joins Jefferson from Kaiser Permanente Health Plan, where he served in various capacities for the past eight years, to include Executive Director, National Facilities Services Colorado and Mid-Atlantic and Vice President (Interim) Facilities Operations.
