Course Description
This course is presented by Annual Healthcare Symposium by AIA AAH and SMPS Tampa Bay.
This year’s event will focus on the how the healthcare model has evolved to put care where it is needed most. The program will include a keynote presentation from a dynamic doctor duo from the University of Michigan followed by a panel of healthcare leaders from the Tampa Bay region. Find out what they’ve learned and how it impacts future healthcare planning.
The number of patient care hours devoted to critical care treatment in emergency departments (ED) has increased dramatically with projections of continued increase at alarming rates. Increased patient volumes, particularly of critically ill patients coupled with capacity constraints have led to a dangerous inability to provide ideal care for these patients. The University of Michigan Medical Center took a novel approach to this problem in 2012 by designing the first and only of its kind emergency critical care center embedded within the ED which opened for patient care in 2015. This talk will reveal the 7-year post-occupancy clinical outcomes and important lessons learned and highlight the benefits of a lean design process with optimized clinician engagement, focus on innovation and partnership with AEC.
Learning objectives:
- Identify building design strategies used to combine two traditionally separate hospital programs – the emergency department and the intensive care unit – into one unit while accommodating the healthcare guidelines.
- Compare what design solutions simplified the work and processes of the clinical team in the Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3).
- Analyze the 7-year post-occupancy clinical outcomes and important lessons learned as a result of a lean design process with optimized clinician engagement, focus on innovation and partnership with the architects, engineers, and contractors.
- Discuss how local hospital systems have evolved from a technology and infrastructure standpoint to accommodate the various types of patients that present on campus at the main hospital and off-campus at urgent cares, ambulatory surgery centers, etc.
